‘A room for me’: North Preston duo starts fitness team for Black women

Shanea Sparks and Lakara Whynder wanted to see a room exactly where Black gals could truly feel at ease working out, and see on their own mirrored in the place — so they created just one. 

In March, Sparks and Whynder started out a team called Black Female Fitness to fill a hole they’ve discovered in the Halifax region. 

“There is not a lot of locations wherever you can go in a health area and you see a large amount of other people that glance like you,” Sparks stated. 

Past thirty day period, they partnered with Halifax health and fitness center R Studios to keep their first spin course, and promoted it on social media and by term of mouth in their neighborhood. They have been blown absent by the reaction. 

“We experienced messages for days telling us how much everyone beloved the course,” Sparks explained. “How anyone just liked staying in this house, you know, comprehensive of Black ladies. It just felt very empowering.”

‘It was the vibes, the music’

The friends believe the special energy in the area is partly why the class was so well known. They helped program the course, and chose their favorite R&B and hip hop music to go along with the exercise routine.

“We experienced a very good work out, but it was additional of an encounter than just a conditioning class,” Whynder explained. “It was all environment. It was the vibes, the audio.”

When they held their second course, attendance numbers grew. Gabrielle Grant, from East Preston, went to both the classes and ideas to hold coming.

“If I’m all around men and women that appear like me and gals that guidance me and you can find … a assist method in it, I come to feel welcome to arrive,” Grant stated. “I come to feel like there is certainly a house for me.”

She reported the finest part was the workout wasn’t as well serious, and everybody was there to have a good time.

Whynder and Sparks explained the objectives of the team reflect their very own lifelong physical fitness journeys. Two yrs in the past, Whynder was part of the winning group of a regional “greatest loser” excess weight-reduction opposition. She mentioned it taught her she requirements accountability.

She stated searching at the area and observing a group of Black girls spinning together designed her feel “blessed and thankful.”

The good friends approach to branch out to consist of new routines in their Black Lady Conditioning programming with R Studios, and they claimed they’re energized to make their gatherings bigger and superior.

Sparks reported they are also considering opening up the courses to other females of color, or even Black gentlemen in the future. 

“It’s just super, tremendous critical for everyone to occur in and not really feel like intimidated … getting individuals out and displaying people around us that functioning out is enjoyable.”
